Equal Pay Analysis at the University of Zurich

UZH Equal Pay Analysis 2020

The Swiss Federal Act on Gender Equality states that men and women are entitled to equal pay for the same work. To make sure that this is accomplished as far as possible, since July 2020 employers with 100 or more employees have been required by law to carry out an analysis of their employees’ salaries to check for discrimination.

UZH also regularly measures the pay differences between the men and women employed at the university.

Human Resources has carried out three equal pay analyses at UZH so far, in 2014, 2016 and – most recently – with data from August 2020. All three analyses were carried out using Logib, the Swiss government’s tool for analyzing equal pay.

UZH is pleased to announce that on the whole UZH has maintained equal pay in 2020 (as in 2016 and 2014); the gender-related pay differences between men and women at UZH are minimal[1].

The existing cantonal system of pay categories with its function-related classification, irrespective of gender, continues to prove its worth. In addition, there are also clear, binding classification guidelines for certain academic and junior academic positions.

In addition to carrying out an obligatory equal pay analysis, organizations with 100 or more employees are also required to have their analysis verified by an independent body as per Art. 13 of the Gender Equality Act. These are, among others, auditing companies with approval of the Auditor Oversight Act.

The results must be communicated to employees in writing within one year. An independent auditor has therefore audited the equal pay analysis for UZH, and we have published the relevant report (in German): UZH Lohngleichheitsanalyse 2020 Revisionsbericht. (PDF, 2 MB)

[1] The Swiss government’s tolerance threshold used for procurements is at 5% for gender-related pay differences; according to the 2020 analysis, women earn 1.3% less than men at UZH.
